Effects of Stress on Your Body and How to Fight It Naturally

Apr 30, 2025

There’s a moment I’ll never forget. It was a typical Wednesday—I had finished two Zoom meetings on an empty stomach when I noticed my jaw was so tense I could barely open my mouth. My heart raced, my stomach twisted, and I couldn’t remember the last time I took a deep breath. That’s when I realized the effects of stress on the body had overwhelmed me. It wasn’t just tiredness or being overworked; it was burnout. This experience led me to explore stress in-depth, not just how to manage it, but how to truly understand it. What I learned transformed my life, and I hope it brings you the same clarity.

☠️ Real Impact of Stress on Your Body

People commonly perceive stress as vague since describing oneself as stressed basically means having many happenings in life. Stress extends far beyond the common meaning of hectic lifestyle. It’s not just in your head. Stress resides within all your blood, organs, muscles and immune system. Under such conditions stress creates a chain reaction and might result in severe long-term medical issues.

Our bodies react strongly to stress through chemical and physical processes according to information provided by stress management professionals I spoke with.

🧠 1. Brain on Stress: Fatigue, and Frustration

Dr. Neha Sharma, a clinical psychologist based in Mumbai, explains that prolonged exposure to stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline can lead to structural and functional changes in the brain.

Over time, this can impair memory, weaken emotional control, and reduce decision-making abilities.

I now understand this on a personal level. Before going through a stressful phase, I was confident and performed well. But during those months, I frequently misplaced things, forgot names, and often went blank mid-sentence. This led to intense self-doubt. I even began to worry that something was seriously wrong with my mind.

In reality, these symptoms were the result of extended cortisol exposure—my brain was under stress, and it showed.

😣 2. Muscles always Stay Tensed

When stress continues, your body avoids returning to normal operation as it stays prepared for danger with persistent muscle tension. That dull ache in your neck? The lower back stiffness? Your clenched jaw?

Yep. Your body creates an intense warning through physical symptoms because it reaches its limit to maintain this state.

🍽 Digestion Takes a Back Seat

During my stressful period, I experienced severe abdominal bloating, erratic hunger, and digestive issues. At first, I thought it was related to my food choices, but soon I realized stress was the real culprit.

Dr. Ritesh Menon, a gastroenterologist in Bengaluru, explains that during stress, the body shifts its energy away from non-essential functions like digestion. This leads to delayed digestion, bloating, and even stomach acidity, which can develop into conditions like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

I felt a constant sense of fullness without satisfaction, yet my stomach always seemed hungry between meals, and I was constantly upset. Once I learned to manage my stress, my digestive health began to improve significantly.

🦠 4. Your Immune System Weakens

The months I spent under that amount of pressure made me fall ill frequently with colds and minor infections together with skin breakout outbreaks. The science was simple:

Your body suppresses immune system function when stress hormones stay elevated.

The elevated risk of sickness combines with delayed recovery times and possibly leads to new autoimmune issues. Your body becomes more at-risk during times of stress yet your continued struggle against stress will eventually result in a body response.

💤 5. Sleep Becomes a Battle

When you’re exhausted, sleep should come naturally. But stress has a strange effect: it makes sleep nearly impossible.

That was my experience. Instead of drifting off, my mind raced with thoughts about deadlines, awkward conversations, and even late-night grocery lists. Sleep, once something I looked forward to, became something I dreaded.

Dr. Sharma explains this phenomenon perfectly:

“When your nervous system never gets a break during the day, it struggles to relax at night.”

🛠️ How I Fought Back from Stress (And Also You Can Too)

People have to face the reality that stress is not disappearing from their lives. A rapidly demanding world surrounds all of us at present. Resistance to stress minimally changes everything.

The steps which helped me reconnect my peace with my energy and self-identity will be shared with you next.

🌿 1. I Created a Daily “Decompression Window”

  • Every day from 7 to 8 PM, I disconnect from work, screens, and social media.
  • I prepare a warm cup of black coffee to set the tone.
  • Then, I sit with a notebook to reflect on and process my day.
  • There’s no pressure to be productive — no goals, no to-do lists.
  • Just stillness and presence.

This 60-minute ritual helps my nervous system feel safe and calm, reminding it that it’s okay to slow down.

🚶‍♀️ 2. Nature Walks with Zero Tech

During my daily barefoot walks, I left behind all distractions—no audiobooks, no phone, just me and nature.

Surrounded by trees and the calming sound of birdsong, I gave my mind a break.

According to Stanford scientists, just 20 minutes in a natural environment can significantly lower cortisol levels—the hormone responsible for stress.

For me, this simple, accessible practice became a form of free therapy—calming, healing, and always available.

💬 3. Therapy Helped Me

Therapy helped uncover the hidden roots of my stress—perfectionism, overcommitment, and poor boundaries.

During my very first session, my therapist gave me a simple but powerful assignment:
Say “no” to one task in the coming week.

When I finally followed through, I felt an unexpected sense of freedom and relief. That one small step opened the door to deeper healing.

🧘 4. Yoga and Breathwork Became My Reset Button

You don’t need to be spiritual or flexible to benefit from yoga or breathwork.
Just deep breathing and simple stretches—especially along the spine—can be incredibly effective.

Even 10 minutes of gentle, mindful movement each day can create powerful shifts in both your emotional state and physical well-being.

I followed free YouTube videos, especially Yoga with Adriene, and noticed the calming effects almost immediately

📴 5.  Set Tech Boundaries

  • Disable all unnecessary notifications. All email notification alerts switched off during evenings starting at 7 PM.
  • I stopped using my scrolling habit right before going to sleep. Sleep got better. Anxiety dropped. Focus returned.

Our bodies remain in a ready-to-fight state whenever we remain connected since being “plugged in” causes prolonged stress activation.

💡 Tips to Manage Stress

The following list presents five evidence-based activities that you can start working on today:

  1. Try 4-7-8 breathing to instantly calm your nervous system.
  2. Aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep every night.
  3. Eat whole foods mindfully to support digestion and gut health.
  4. Move daily with walking, stretching, or light exercise.
  5. Connect through honest conversations to ease emotional tension.

❤️ Be Kind to Yourself

Stress was the lesson that brought the most important knowledge into my life.

The current state of being under stress does not signify personal frailty. Your body signals you this way to attract your attention.

Listen to it. Care for it. Wait until it is too late to become a habit.

I still get stressed. Life still throws curveballs. But now, I have tools. I have rituals. Awareness remains the most crucial thing I have acquired.

Your body should never require an uproar to convey your needs due to the life you deserve.
