From Delhi to the Islands: A Raw, Unfiltered Malaysian Getaway

The adventure started in Kuala Lumpur, a city that operates non-stop, 24 hours a day. I settled in Bukit Bintang, a vibrant area that never seems to rest.
From day to dawn, the streets pulsed with energy. Every day began with kopi (strong Malaysian coffee) and roti canai at a local mamak stall, where I discovered that food is almost a religion for Malaysians. Locals often approached me to start conversations, curious about my origins and generous with travel recommendations. A quiet sense of community and friendliness filled the area.

My time was dedicated to exploring two culturally distinct neighborhoods—Chinatown and Little India. The architectural contrasts, mingled with the scent of joss sticks and the constant hum of scooters, overwhelmed my senses. In Little India, I stumbled upon unexpected festival celebrations and was swept up by the cheerful crowd. I danced among them, and a kind aunty even offered me sweets.

You often stumble upon beautiful moments in Malaysia when you least expect them; the country surprises you with its spontaneous charm in every experience.

My first visit to the Petronas Towers felt surreal, as they gleamed in the morning sunlight. These twin towers rose like beacons above the dense cityscape. One evening, I sat in KLCC Park eating takeaway nasi lemak while couples strolled by and children played under the city’s soft glow. A work about Kuala Lumpur’s food ecosystem should be written as a book. Jalan Alor emerged as the city’s most renowned food street to which I made nightly visits. The selection was mind-boggling because street vendors demonstrated cooking satay on fire pits along with spicy laksa boiling in massive pots and expertly tossing char kway teow into magnificent dishes. Every time I ate at one of the numerous South Asian restaurants, it brought me back to familiar tastes of the homeland. Indian cuisine exists as one of the many flavors that compose the Kuala Lumpur food scene.

A Cool Escape to Genting Highlands

My stay in Kuala Lumpur brought me to Genting Highlands for a day trip visit. Genting Highlands serves as a cool mountain resort that can be reached by taxi within a brief distance from Kuala Lumpur city.

The travel duration revealed hidden Malaysian destinations that otherwise remained unseen to me.
To prepare for my ferry journey the following morning I spent the night in a guesthouse at Kuala Perlis while eating basic dinner and securing a restful sleep.

The Struggle for Indian Food

The search for Indian food proved extremely difficult for me during my bus trip between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Perlis. The bus journey required me to make use of local food as my main sustenance so I consumed egg roti which combines flatbread with scrambled eggs. Despite its quality I missed the traditional home spices during this period. My advice? If you plan to journey by car for an extended period, you should keep some snacks in your possession for emergencies.

🚢 Ferry Ride from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi

The Kuala Perlis to Langkawi ferry journey mesmerized all passengers with its sights. I experienced astonishment when the boat passed through the waters because the rich green islands touched my gaze and the soothing sea breeze caressed the air. The ferry experience marked an impressive beginning to my time on Langkawi Island which gave me the impression the entire unplanned trip was becoming exceptionally great.

Most of my stay in Langkawi involved eating only egg roti and sandwiches since there were no Indian restaurants in the area. Finally, I discovered a tiny Pakistani eatery that allowed me to enjoy something reminiscent of home cooking. The restaurant provided exceptional food which brought comfort as it served proper meals after eating nothing but sandwiches during this time.
